Random Organization, Hyperuniformity and Photonic Bandgaps
A periodically sheared suspension undergoes collisions which allow the particles to explore new configurations. Below a critical strain the system evolves and organizes itself until collisions no longer occur - an absorbing state by “Random Organization.” Recent work shows that at the critical point the absorbing states are hyperuniform. Hyperuniform systems have fluctuations which grow less rapidly with size than random systems. Torquato and Steinhardt suggested that hyperuniformity rather than periodicity is responsible for spectral gaps in wavelike materials. We have constructed Hyperuniform disordered systems (HUDS) on a cm (microwave) find large isotropic photonic bandgaps that allow arbitrary waveguides, switching, and resonant cavities.
