Institute Film Series: Hunger

Institute Film Series and Law and the Social Sciences Film Series screening of Hunger (2008), directed by Steve McQueen, followed by a post-screening discussion led by Banu Bargu, a Guest of the School of Social Science.

Hunger follows several lead Irish Republican Army prisoners, including Bobby Sands, incarcerated in Northern Ireland's Maze prison in 1981. A hunger strike is waged in response to inhumane prison conditions as well as the IRA prisoners' designation as criminals as opposed to political prisoners by British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Steve McQueen, a visual artist turned filmmaker, explores the brutal world of corporeal punishment and political resistance in extreme carceral conditions. The film has received many awards, including the Caméra d'Or at the Cannes Festival.

This movie is the sixth film in the Law and the Social Sciences series curated by the School of Social Science. The film runs 1 hour and 36 minutes, and will be followed by a reception in the Fuld Hall Common Room. Please note that food and drink are not allowed in Wolfensohn Hall. The event is free and open to the Institute community.
