2005-2006 Season

In 2003-2004, the Institute for Advanced Study's Artist-in-Residence Program launched Recent Pasts 20/21, a four-year initiative of chamber music concerts and lectures. Hosted by Institute Artist-in-Residence, composer Jon Magnussen, the series is designed to explore the wide variety of aesthetic perspectives in western art music of the 20th and early 21st centuries.

This year's series features nationally and internationally known artists with performances by Fred Hersch, jazz piano; and three ensembles: Music from Copland House, So Percussion and Trollstilt. Speakers in the series include composers John Corigliano and David Lang. Each Institute concert series includes a concert talk with the musicians hosted by Magnussen.

Widely recognized for his ability to reinvent the standard jazz repertoire, pianist and composer Fred Hersch is steadfastly creating his own unique body of work that speaks to the gradual erasure of boundaries between the jazz and classical music traditions. Described by The New Yorker as “a poet of a pianist,” Hersch offers a program of works by Thelonius Monk and Cole Porter, and includes his own compositions. A post-concert discussion illuminates aspects of the improvisatory art and explores the connections between the jazz and classical music traditions.

Music From Copland House, the acclaimed resident ensemble at Copland’s longtime, landmark New York home, performs the music of Academy Award®- and Pulitzer Prize-winner John Corigliano, and music of composers who influenced him, Igor Stravinsky and Aaron Copland. Works on the program include: Corigliano’s Mr. Tambourine Man: Poems of Bob Dylan for soprano and piano; Soliloquy for clarinet and string quartet; Snapshot: Circa 1909 for string quartet; Copland’s Sextet for clarinet, piano and string quartet; and Stravinsky’s Concertino for string quartet.

Music from Copland House artists Derek Bermel, clarinet; Michael Boriskin, piano; and Wilhelmina Smith, cello are joined by guest artists Mary Nessinger, mezzo-soprano; Curtis Macomber and Jesse Mills, violins; and Hsin-Yun Huang, viola.

Hailed as “brilliant...consistently impressive” (New York Times), So Percussion performs David Lang’s meditative masterpiece, The So-Called Laws of Nature, and joins Trollstilt (Dan Trueman--Hardanger and electric fiddles; Monica Mugan--classical guitar) for Dan Trueman’s compelling electronic chamber work, Five (and-a-half) Gardens.
