Research Description: Jessica Goldberg uses mercantile records to explore medieval geography not from the high culture of the literary record but as a practical problem. The business records of two twelfth-century communities––Jewish businessmen of Cairo and merchants of Genoa––show the Mediterranean from the eyes of those whose professions depended on the connections between places.
