INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY HOSTS PROGRAM FOR WOMEN IN MATHEMATICS

PRINCETON, N.J. - May 5, 2004 - Women mathematicians from around the country will gather at the Institute for Advanced Study for an 11-day residential Program for Women in Mathematics. The annual program, which is co-sponsored with Princeton University, will take place from May 17-28. The 60 participants will include undergraduate and graduate students as well as postdoctoral scholars and senior researchers. Now celebrating its 11th year on the Institute campus, the program emphasizes mathematics learning and research, mentoring, peer relations, and an introduction to career opportunities.

The research topic is Analysis and Nonlinear PDEs, and the organizers are Sun-Yung Alice Chang, professor of mathematics at Princeton University, and Karen Uhlenbeck, who holds the Sid W. Richardson Foundation Regents’ Chair in Mathematics at the University of Texas, Austin. Lecturers for the beginning course include Cristina Pereyra, University of New Mexico, and Lesley Ward, Harvey Mudd College. Lecturers for the advanced course are Jill Pipher, Brown University, and Gigliola Staffilani, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who is a current Member in the School of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study.

Among those serving on the Organizing Committee are Ingrid Daubechies and Cynthia Diane Rudin of Princeton University; Nancy Hingston of The College of New Jersey; and Robert MacPherson of the Institute’s School of Mathematics. The program is under the direction of Uhlenbeck, a former visiting scholar at the Institute; Chang; and Chuu-Lian Terng of Northeastern University. Also assisting with the program are Institute Members Andrea Nahmod and Natasa Pavlovic.

The program offers a variety of activities, both formal and informal, designed to encourage interaction among participants. In addition to undergraduate and graduate level lecture courses, there are research seminars, and seminar presentations by participants at all levels, working problem sessions, and a Women in Science Seminar. A day of activities on the Princeton University campus will include lectures, a Noetherian Ring panel discussion, and a dinner sponsored by the University’s Department of Mathematics.

Past participants are invited for a Reunion day of lectures and discussions, which is scheduled for May 22 at the Institute.

Support for the program is provided by The Starr Foundation.
