MICHAEL GEHRET SELECTED AS NEW ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR AT THE INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY

October 12, 2005, Princeton, N.J. The Institute for Advanced Study has announced that it has selected Michael Gehret as its new Associate Director for Development and Public Affairs. Mr. Gehret, a seasoned development professional with extensive not-for-profit experience, will begin at the Institute in late November. Mr. Gehret will replace Rachel D. Gray, who will be retiring from the Institute in January 2006 after 15 years of dedicated service.

Reporting to Peter Goddard, Director of the Institute, Mr. Gehret will provide the vision and collaborative leadership to plan and execute an effective and comprehensive Development and Public Affairs program that ensures the Institute's continued independence and commitment to excellence in research. As the Institute's chief development officer, Mr. Gehret will design, articulate and implement the future fundraising strategies of the Institute.

Peter Goddard stated, "We are immensely pleased that Mr. Gehret will be joining the Institute. Mike brings a depth and breadth of experience that we believe will contribute greatly to the future health of the Institute, and his leadership will play a crucial role as we continue our efforts to communicate the Institute's achievements more widely. Mike will help to further strengthen the Institute's resources, to ensure our ability to remain committed to our mission of fostering truly fundamental research."

Mr. Gehret noted, "I am greatly honored to have been invited to join the senior management team at the Institute for Advanced Study. The Institute's distinguished history, its unique mission, the excellence of its faculty and programs, and the extraordinary quality of its staff and volunteer leadership make this an exceptional opportunity for a development professional. I look forward to working with Peter Goddard, the Trustees, and the entire Institute family to secure the financial resources necessary to fund the Institute's work for many years to come."

Mr. Gehret has worked for 35 years in the not-for-profit sector, primarily in orchestra management with a focus on general institutional management, development, planning and marketing. He was most recently with the consulting firm Charles R. Feldstein and Company, which he joined as Vice Chairman in 2002. In his capacity at Feldstein, he has worked with a variety of clients including the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Clark Art Institute, the Merit School of Music, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Prior to joining Feldstein, Mr. Gehret served as Senior Vice President for Resources and Planning for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) for close to a decade. In that role, he was responsible for annual fundraising, special underwriting, endowment development, planned giving, government grants, and volunteer activities, as well as the CSO's marketing, communications, and ticket sales programs. Under his direction, the CSO completed a successful capital campaign, raising more than $112 million for the renovation of Orchestra Hall and construction of Symphony Center, which opened in October 1997.

Before joining the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Gehret served at the San Francisco Symphony as Development Director (1981-93). Prior to the Symphony, he worked in development and management positions at John Carroll University (1979-81); the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra (1977-79); the Yale Alumni Fund (1974-77); and Vassar College (1970-74).

Mr. Gehret earned a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Princeton University in 1969 and a masters degree in Higher Education Administration from Columbia in 1971. He was Chairman of the Committee to Nominate Alumni Trustees at Princeton University and is Class Agent for his Class. He is a member of the Economic Club of Chicago and its Membership Committee, and of the University Club of Chicago and its Public Relations Committee. He was President of the Board of Episcopal Charities and Community Services, was Treasurer of the University Club of Chicago, and is Past President and Honorary Director of the Association of California Symphony Orchestras.
