Prospects in Theoretical Physics, an intensive two-week summer program geared specifically to graduate students and postdoctoral scholars considering a career in theoretical physics, will take place at the Institute for Advanced Study from July 17 to 28. First held at the Institute in 2002, Prospects in Theoretical Physics has, in past years, covered topics ranging from the Large Hadron Collider to cosmology and strings.

Avishai Margalit, one of the foremost thinkers and commentators on the contemporary human condition, the moral issues of our time and current problems facing western societies, has been appointed as the George F. Kennan Professor in the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study. Dr. Margalit, currently the Schulman Professor of Philosophy at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, will officially begin his two-year appointment on July 1, 2006.

Mathematicians to Study Zeta Functions and their Applications

Fifty-three women mathematicians from throughout the United States will gather at the Institute for Advanced Study this May for the Program for Women and Mathematics. The 11-day residential program, sponsored by the Institute and Princeton University, will be held from May 15 to May 26, marking its 13th year on the Institute campus.

Leading Historian on Ancient History Retires After Twenty-Six Years at the Institute

Glen Bowersock, a preeminent authority on Greek, Roman, and Near Eastern history, will present "The Three Romes" on Friday, May 5, at 6:00 p.m. in Wolfensohn Hall on the campus of the Institute for Advanced Study. Dr. Bowersock is a Professor in the School of Historical Studies, and will be retiring after twenty-six years at the Institute on July 1, 2006.

Edward Tsang Lu, research physicist and NASA astronaut, will present "Preventing Asteroid Impacts: A Gravitational Tractor for Towing Asteroids" on Friday, April 28, at 5:00 p.m. in Wolfensohn Hall on the campus of the Institute for Advanced Study.

On April 13, 2036, there will be a one-in-5,000 chance of asteroid 99942 Apophis striking the Earth. On May 4, 2104, there is a one-in-1,500 chance of asteroid 2004VD17 striking the Earth.

Arnold J. Levine, Professor, The Simons Center for Systems Biology in the School of Natural Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Study, has been awarded a $500,000 unrestricted Freedom to Discover grant from Bristol-Myers Squibb Company for cancer research.

"Giant Pipes and Flowerpots: Music in the Birch Garden" is the final event in the Institute for Advanced Study�s Recent Pasts 20/21 2005-2006 concert season. So Percussion and Trollstilt will perform on Saturday, May 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Birch Garden on the Institute campus.

Caroline Walker Bynum, a leading scholar instrumental in introducing the concept of gender into the study of medieval Christianity, will present "Living Blood Poured Out: Piety, Practice, and Theology in Northern Europe in the Fifteenth Century" on Wednesday, February 22, at 4:30 p.m. in Wolfensohn Hall on the campus of the Institute for Advanced Study. Dr. Bynum is a Professor in the School of Historical Studies at the Institute.

John Norris Bahcall, the late Richard Black Professor of Astrophysics in the School of Natural Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Study, was posthumously awarded NASA's Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal. NASA Administrator Michael Griffin presented the award today to Dr. Bahcall's widow, Dr. Neta Bahcall, during a ceremony at the 207th meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Washington, DC.
