Geertz Receives Award From Indonesian Government

Anthropologist Clifford Geertz (center), professor emeritus in the School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study, was honored by the Indonesian government at a reception held March 12 at the Institute. With Geertz are Ambassador Makmur Widodo (left) and Institute Director Phillip A. Griffiths (right).
Geertz received the Award of Meritorious Achievement (Bintang Jasa Utame, First Class) for "great public contributions to the Nation and People of Indonesia, most especially in the area of promoting closer, cooperative working relationships with the Government of the Republic of Indonesia."
Geertz has conducted extensive ethnographic research on the Indonesian islands of Sumatra, Java, Bali, and Sulawesi.
