Fermat's Last Tango To Be Shown At Institute For Advanced Study

There will be a screening of Fermat's Last Tango at the Institute for Advanced Study on May 14 at 8:00 p.m. in Wolfensohn Hall on the Institute campus. The musical fantasy is based on the story of Princeton University mathematician Andrew Wiles and his proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem—a problem that had puzzled mathematicians since the 17th century.

This film of the original New York production is a project of the Clay Mathematics Institute, a private, nonprofit foundation based in Cambridge, Mass., that is dedicated to increasing and disseminating mathematical knowledge.
Arthur Jaffe, Clay Professor of Mathematics and Theoretical Science at Harvard University, and president of the Clay Mathematics Institute, will introduce the event. There will also be a short video of an interview with Andrew Wiles.
Fermat’s Last Tango, by Joanne Sydney Lessner and Joshua Rosenblum, was produced in 2000 at the York Theater in Manhattan. The live-performance video is by David Stern.

The event is free and open to the public. A reception, to be held at 7:00 p.m. in the Fuld Hall Common Room, will precede the screening.
