Gift Will Support the Institute's Center for Systems Biology

The Institute for Advanced Study has announced that it has selected John Masten as its new Associate Director for Finance and Administration. Mr. Masten, a senior executive with broad experience in the academic and not-for-profit sectors, will begin at the Institute on December 1. He will replace Allen I. Rowe, who will be retiring from his position in December after twenty-seven years of dedicated service.

Marshall Clagett, one of the world's leading historians of medieval science, in particular the work and influence of Archimedes, died early this morning at the age of 89 in Princeton, NJ. Dr. Clagett was Professor Emeritus in the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study, his academic home for the past four decades.

 The Institute for Advanced Study has announced that it has selected Michael Gehret as its new Associate Director for Development and Public Affairs. Mr. Gehret, a seasoned development professional with extensive not-for-profit experience, will begin at the Institute in late November. Mr. Gehret will replace Rachel D. Gray, who will be retiring from the Institute in January 2006 after 15 years of dedicated service.

The Institute for Advanced Study today announced that it has received $25 million from the Charles Simonyi Fund for Arts and Sciences. The unrestricted cash gift is the largest donation since the founding of the Institute, and will be named The Karoly Simonyi Memorial Endowment Fund, honoring Charles Simonyi's late father.

"Songs�With and Without Words" is the opening event in the Institute for Advanced Study�s Recent Pasts 20/21 2005-2006 concert season. Pianist and composer Fred Hersch will perform on October 7 and 8 at 8:00 p.m. in Wolfensohn Hall on the Institute campus. Immediately following the concert, Hersch will speak with Institute Artist-in-Residence Jon Magnussen on the improvisatory art and the connections between the jazz and classical musical traditions.

Prospects in Theoretical Physics, an intensive two-week summer program geared specifically to graduate students considering a career in theoretical physics, will take place at the Institute for Advanced Study from July 18 to 29. First held at the Institute in 2002, Prospects in Theoretical Physics has, in past years, covered topics ranging from string theory to cosmology.
