The Institute for Advanced Study has announced the schedule for its 2007-08 season, the inaugural Edward T. Cone Concert Series, curated by the new Artist-in-Residence, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Paul Moravec.  The series, Tradition Redefined, will explore the wide variety of aesthetic perspectives in art music, especially of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Renowned Norwegian mathematician Atle Selberg, Professor Emeritus in the School of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study, died on the evening of August 6 at his home in Princeton, NJ.  He was 90.

Particle physicist Nima Arkani-Hamed will join the Faculty at the Institute for Advanced Study, effective January 1, 2008.  Dr. Arkani-Hamed comes to the Institute's School of Natural Sciences from Harvard University, where he is currently Professor of Physics.

Prospects in Theoretical Physics, an intensive two-week summer program geared specifically to graduate students and postdoctoral scholars considering a career in theoretical physics, will take place at the Institute for Advanced Study from July 16 to 27.  First held at the Institute in 2002, Prospects in Theoretical Physics has, in past years, covered topics ranging from the Large Hadron Collider to string theory.

Peter Sarnak has been appointed to the Faculty of the School of Mathematics of the Institute for Advanced Study, effective July 1, 2007.  Dr. Sarnak is the Eugene Higgins Professor of Mathematics at Princeton University, and he will continue to hold this appointment in conjunction with his professorship at the Institute.

The Institute for Advanced Study has appointed Dr. Andrew J. Wiles, Eugene Higgins Professor of Mathematics and Chair of the Department of Mathematics at Princeton University, to its Board of Trustees, effective May 5, 2007.  A world-renowned mathematician, Dr. Wiles is perhaps best known for his proof of Fermat's Last Theorem, for which he was honored by the International Mathematical Union in 1998.

Robert P. Langlands Shares Mathematics Prize and Peter Goldreich Receives Astronomy Prize

Two Faculty members at the Institute for Advanced Study have been awarded the 2007 Shaw Prize.  Robert P. Langlands, Hermann Weyl Professor in the School of Mathematics, and Peter Goldreich, Professor in the School of Natural Sciences, have been recognized for their achievements in Mathematical Sciences and Astronomy, respectively. 

The Institute for Advanced Study has announced the appointment of composer Paul Moravec as Artist-in-Residence.  As the Institute's resident composer, Paul Moravec will introduce new works and lead the Institute's annual concert series.  His term begins on July 1, 2007.
