The Institute for Advanced Study will host Prospects in Theoretical Physics (PiTP) from July 13 to 24. This year's intensive two-week summer program for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars will focus on Computational Astrophysics.

The Institute for Advanced Study has appointed social anthropologist Didier Fassin as the first James D. Wolfensohn Professor in the School of Social Science beginning July 1, 2009. Dr. Fassin currently serves as Professor of Sociology at the Université de Paris, Nord, as well as Director of Studies in Political and Moral Anthropology at the Ecole des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) and is the Founding Director of the Institut de Recherche Interdisciplinaire sur les Enjeux Sociaux (IRIS). Angelika Neuwirth, Professor at the Freie Universität Berlin and Member in the School of Historical Studies, will discuss “The ‘Late Antique Qur'an’: Jewish-Christian Liturgy, Hellenic Rhetoric and Arabic Language” on Wednesday, June 3, at 4:30 p.m. in the West Building Lecture Hall at the Institute for Advanced Study. 

Focus on Introduction to Geometric Partial Differential Equations

Some fifty women mathematicians from throughout the United States will gather at the Institute for Advanced Study this June for the Program for Women and Mathematics. The 11-day residential program, sponsored by the Institute and Princeton University, will be held from June 8 to June 19, marking its 16th year on the Institute campus.

Simons Foundation Provides Major Funding for Joint Initiative with The Rockefeller University

Stanislas Leibler has been appointed to the Faculty of the School of Natural Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Study, effective April 1, 2009.  Currently the Gladys T. Perkin Professor and Head of the Laboratory of Living Matter at The Rockefeller University, Leibler will continue to hold this appointment in conjunction with his professorship at the Institute.  This appointment is part of a new joint initiative in quantitative and theoretical biology with Rockefeller, established through a $10 million gift from the Simons Foundation that is divided equally between the Institute and Rockefeller.

If poorer countries are to achieve greater prosperity, there is a demonstrated need for improved scientific proficiency within them.  The Science Initiative Group (SIG), based at the Institute for Advanced Study, is an international team of scientific leaders and supporters dedicated to fostering science in developing countries.  Phillip Griffiths, Professor in the School of Mathematics at the Institute and Chair of SIG, will address

Sir Robert May, current president of Britain's Royal Society, and former Chief Scientific Advisor to the UK Government and Head of the UK Office of Science and Technology, will speak on "Unanswered Questions in Ecology" at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2 in Wolfensohn Hall on the campus of the Institute for Advanced Study. The event is part of the Institute's Public Lecture Series in Biology. A reception in the Common Room of Fuld Hall will follow the lecture.

The Institute for Advanced Study has announced the appointment of composer and clarinetist Derek Bermel as Artist-in-Residence.  During his stay at the Institute, Bermel will pursue his scholarly and creative interests while developing major work, profiting from opportunities similar to those offered by the Institute to visiting scientists and scholars.  As the Institute’s resident composer, Bermel also will arrange the Institute’s annual Edward T. Cone Concert Series.  His term begins on July 1, 2009.

Although the concept of randomness is ubiquitous, it turns out to be difficult to generate a truly random sequence of events. Jean Bourgain, Professor in the School of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study, will address this puzzle in his talk, Search for Randomness.  The lecture will take place on Wednesday, March 25, at 4:30 p.m. in Wolfensohn Hall on the Institute’s campus.

Princeton, N.J., February 17, 2009 - Theoretical astrophysicist and cosmologist Matias Zaldarriaga will join the Faculty at the Institute for Advanced Study, effective July 1, 2009.  Dr. Zaldarriaga comes to the Institute's School of Natural Sciences from Harvard University, where he is currently a professor in the departments of astronomy and physics.  Dr. Zaldarriaga will succeed astrophysicist Peter Goldreich, who joined the Faculty in 2004 and who will retire on June 30, 2009.
