Patricia Crone, Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study, will present “The Acculturated Native Who Rebels: Nativists, Nationalists and Western-Born Jihadists in Historical Perspective” on Wednesday, December 2, at 4:30 p.m. in Wolfensohn Hall on the Institute’s campus.

The Institute for Advanced Study has elected Harold T. Shapiro, economist and President Emeritus of Princeton University and the University of Michigan, to its Board of Trustees, effective October 31, 2009.  Dr. Shapiro is currently a Professor in the Department of Economics and Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, where his fields of special interest in economics include econometrics, bioethics, science policy and the evolution of postsecondary education.

Matias Zaldarriaga, Professor in the School of Natural Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Study, will present “In the Beginning: Modern Cosmology and the Origin of Our Universe” on Wednesday, November 11, at 4:30 p.m. in Wolfensohn Hall on the Institute’s campus.

Peter Goldreich, Professor Emeritus in the School of Natural Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Study, will discuss “The Evolution of Bodies Bound by Gravity” at a lecture on Friday, October 30, at 6:00 p.m. in Wolfensohn Hall on the Institute’s campus.

$3.5 Million Donation will Establish The Shelby White and Leon Levy Archives Center at the Institute to Preserve Important Historical Materials

The Institute for Advanced Study has received a $3.5 million gift from the Leon Levy Foundation to fund the creation of The Shelby White and Leon Levy Archives Center, which will enable the Institute to conserve and collect its current and future holdings of records and historical documents relating to the Institute, Faculty papers, oral histories, photographs and other significant documentation.

David Cole, a Professor at the Georgetown University Law Center and a volunteer staff attorney for the Center for Constitutional Rights, will present a lecture, “Torture and Accountability in the ‘War on Terror’: What Should Be Done?” at the Institute for Advanced Study on Friday, October 23, at 5:30 p.m. in Wolfensohn Hall on the campus of the Institute.

September 4, 2009 - Music from classical to cabaret, from virtuoso violin to jazz piano, will mark the Institute for Advanced Study's 2009-10 Edward T. Cone Concert Series, curated by Artist-in-Residence Derek Bermel. The Harmonic Series will explore the wide variety of aesthetic perspectives in art music, especially of the 20th and 21st centuries.

The Institute for Advanced Study has received a five-year $1.1 million grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation that enables Assistant Professors to come to the Institute as Members in the School of Historical Studies. The grant is a renewal of previous, sustained support from the Foundation, and demonstrates the joint commitment of the Institute and Foundation to assisting academics at a critical point in their careers.

The Institute for Advanced Study has appointed William H. Sewell Jr., Frank P. Hixon Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Political Science and History at the University of Chicago, to its Board of Trustees, effective July 1, 2009. A scholar who has focused on the relationship between history and social theory, Dr. Sewell was nominated by the Institute's School of Social Science. He succeeds Peter Galison, Joseph Pellegrino University Professor in the Department of the History of Science at Harvard University, who served for the last five years.
