John H. D'Arms, President of the American Council of Learned Societies, has been named a trustee of the Institute for Advanced Study. He is also Adjunct Professor of History and Classics at Columbia University. Prior to his appointment at the ACLS, he was Professor of Classical Studies and Professor of History at the University of Michigan (1972-97); Chairman of the Department of Classical Studies (1972-77; 1980-85); Dean of the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies (1985-95); and Vice Provost for Academic Affairs (1990-95).

The Institute for Advanced Study has announced the appointment of Juan M. Maldacena as professor in its School of Natural Sciences.

Maldacena, a theoretical physicist, is known for his work in the branch of physics called string theory, which postulates the existence of one-dimensional, small entities that vibrate at different frequencies to form subatomic particles. String theory aims at a unified explanation of all physical forces.

Pianist and composer No�l Lee will perform at the Institute for Advanced Study on December 12 and 14 at 8:00 p.m. and December 16 at 4:00 p.m. The concerts will take place in Wolfensohn Hall on the Institute campus.

Leroy Hood, director of the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle, will speak on "Decoding Life: Genomics, Proteomics, and Systems Biology" on November 14 at 4:30 p.m. in Wolfensohn Hall on the campus of the Institute for Advanced Study.

The event is sponsored by the Institute's Program in Theoretical Biology. A reception in the Common Room of Fuld Hall will follow the lecture.

A leading scientist in molecular biotechnology and genomics, Hood will discuss how the Human Genome Project has led to a new systems approach for biology.

Ernst Fehr, director of the Institute for Empirical Research in Economics at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, will speak on "Human Nature and Social Interaction" on November 7 at 4:30 p.m. in Wolfensohn Hall on the campus of the Institute for Advanced Study.

The event is co-sponsored by the Institute's School of Social Science and its Program in Theoretical Biology. A reception in the Common Room of Fuld Hall will follow the lecture.

Nancy S. MacMillan, publisher of the Princeton Alumni Weekly since 1990, has been named to the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Advanced Study. The Princeton Alumni Weekly is the official alumni magazine of Princeton University, with a circulation of approximately 60,000. She is also President of the Ivy League Magazine Network.

Prior to her current appointment, she has held positions as a business consultant; controller of Arete Publishing Company, Princeton; and assistant treasurer of Bankers Trust Co., New York.

Kenneth Binmore, professor of economics at University College, London, and visitor in the School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study, will speak on "How and Why Did Fairness Norms Evolve?" on November 28 at 4:30 p.m. in Wolfensohn Hall on the Institute campus. The lecture will be followed by a reception in the Common Room of Fuld Hall.

The Institute for Advanced Study has announced the appointment of Kirk Varnedoe, Chief Curator of the Department of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), to the Faculty of the Institute’s School of Historical Studies.

The Institute for Advanced Study has announced the appointment of Jos� Cutileiro as the George F. Kennan Professor in the School of Historical Studies.

Cutileiro, who was Secretary-General of the Western European Union from 1994 to 1999, is currently Special Representative of the U.N. Commission on Human Rights for Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

The Institute for Advanced Study has announced its 2001-02 concert series. "The series combines masterworks of the past with recent music, and several premiere performances," notes Institute Artist-in-Residence, composer Jon Magnussen, who organized the series. "These concerts will offer audiences an opportunity to experience both traditional and innovative music-- to explore new and interactive approaches to making music with acoustic and electronic instruments."
