Dr. Ashvin Chhabra, a financial investment executive, has been appointed Chief Investment Officer at the Institute for Advanced Study.  Dr. Chhabra will join the Institute on May 30 and will work closely with the Finance Committee of the Institute's Board of Trustees and Associate Director for Finance and Administration John Masten on managing the Institute's endowment.

Fifty-one women mathematicians from throughout the United States will gather at the Institute for Advanced Study this May for the Program for Women and Mathematics.  The 11-day residential program, sponsored by the Institute and Princeton University, will be held from May 14 to May 25, marking its 14th year on the Institute campus. 

Leading Political Theorist Retires After Twenty-Seven Years at the Institute

Michael Walzer, UPS Foundation Professor in the School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study, will present the lecture "Terrorism and Just War" on Friday, May 4, at 6:00 p.m. in Wolfensohn Hall on the campus of the Institute.  Professor Walzer will be retiring on July 1, 2007 after twenty-seven years at the Institute. 

Political theorist Danielle Allen has been appointed the UPS Foundation Professor in the School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study.  Dr. Allen will join the Faculty of the Institute on July 1, 2007.

Dr. Allen will fill the position currently held by Michael Walzer, who joined the Faculty of the Institute in 1980 and was named as the UPS Foundation Professor in 1986.  Professor Walzer will retire effective July 1, 2007.

Lakhdar Brahimi, former Special Advisor to the Secretary-General of the United Nations and a Director's Visitor at the Institute for Advanced Study, will speak on "Afghanistan and Iraq: Failed States or Failed Wars?" at the Institute for Advanced Study on Wednesday, March 28, at 4:30 p.m. in Wolfensohn Hall on the campus of the Institute. 

Yve-Alain Bois, Professor of Art History in the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study, will present the lecture The Difficult Task of Erasing Oneself: Non-Composition in Twentieth-Century Art on Wednesday, March 7, at 4:30 p.m. in Wolfensohn Hall on the campus of the Institute.

Institute for Advanced Study and Princeton University Partner on Series

Enrico Bombieri, IBM von Neumann Professor in the School of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study, will present the lecture “The Mathematical Infinity” on Wednesday, January 31, at 4:30 p.m. in Wolfensohn Hall on the campus of the Institute.   Professor Bombieri will discuss the many different ways the concept of infinity has been treated during the ages, from rejecting it as an irrational absurdity to accepting it as the ultimate, inaccessible, perfection.

Juan Maldacena, Professor in the School of Natural Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Study, has been awarded the 2007 Dannie Heineman Prize for Mathematical Physics by the American Institute of Physics and the American Physical Society.
