Joan Wallach Scott, Harold F. Linder Professor in the School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study, will present the lecture Cover-up:  French Gender Equality and the Islamic Headscarf on Tuesday, December 5, at 4:30 p.m. in Wolfensohn Hall on the campus of the Institute.

Kurt Gödel, one of the twentieth century’s most influential thinkers, will be remembered at the Institute for Advanced Study on Friday, November 17 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. In A Program to Mark the Centenary Year of the Birth of Kurt Gödel, a group of international scholars will discuss Gödel’s life, work and impact across the fields of mathematics, philosophy and computer science.

Clifford Geertz, an eminent scholar in the field of cultural anthropology known for his extensive research in Indonesia and Morocco, died at the age of 80 early yesterday morning of complications following heart surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Geertz was Professor Emeritus in the School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study, where he has served on the Faculty since 1970. Dr.

Eric Maskin, Albert O. Hirschman Professor in the School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study, will present the lecture “Why Haven’t Global Markets Reduced Inequality?” on Friday, October 27, at 6:00 p.m. in Wolfensohn Hall on the campus of the Institute.

Heart of Darkness, Tarik O'Regan's opera-in-progress, will receive a concert workshop performance, plus a libretto reading and discussion on November 4 at 8:00 p.m. in Wolfensohn Hall at the Institute for Advanced Study. Presented by the American Opera Projects (AOP) and based on the novella by Joseph Conrad, the opera's libretto is by British artist Tom Phillips.

Institute for Advanced Study and Princeton University Partner on Series

The Institute for Advanced Study has announced the schedule for its 2006-07 concert series. Entitled Recent Pasts 20/21, the series explores a variety of aesthetic perspectives in Western art music of the 20th and early 21st centuries. This year is the final season of the four-year series, which is sponsored by the Institute’s Artist-in-Residence program, curated by Jon Magnussen.

Nathan Seiberg, a leading physicst, will present the lecture “The World’s Largest Experiment”on Wednesday, October 4, at 4:30 p.m. in Wolfensohn Hall on the campus of the Institute for Advanced Study. Dr. Seiberg is a Professor in the School of Natural Sciences at the Institute.

Astrophysicist Scott Tremaine has been appointed the Richard Black Professor of Astrophysics in the School of Natural Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Study. Dr. Tremaine will join the Faculty of the Institute on January 1, 2007.

Dr. Tremaine succeeds the late John Norris Bahcall (1934-2005), who joined the Faculty of the Institute in 1971, and served as the Richard Black Professor from 1997 until his death in August 2005.

The Institute for Advanced Study has appointed Dr. Victoria B. Bjorklund, Dr. David Hollinger and Dr. Florian Langenscheidt to its Board of Trustees. Dr. Bjorklund is a Partner at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, where she heads the Firm's Exempt Organizations Group. Dr. Hollinger, who will serve as Academic Trustee for the School of Historical Studies, is Preston Hotchkis Professor of History at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr.
