The mathematical study of the power and limits of efficient computation is the domain of theoretical computer science. Central to this study is the relationship between two classes of computational problems called "P" and "NP"; understanding this relationship is a major outstanding problem of computer science and mathematics.  Avi Wigderson, Herbert H. Maass Professor in the School of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study, will provide insights into this relationship in his talk, The "P vs. NP" Problem: Efficient Computation, Internet Security, and the Limits of Human Knowledge.

Helmut Hofer has been appointed to the Faculty of the School of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study, effective July 1, 2009.  Dr. Hofer comes to the Institute from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University, where he serves as Silver Professor of Mathematics.

Prospects in Theoretical Physics (PiTP), an intensive two-week summer program for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars considering a career in theoretical physics, will take place at the Institute for Advanced Study from July 14 to 25. The theme of this year's program is Strings and Phenomenology.

Angelos Chaniotis, whose prolific, broad and insightful work on the ancient Mediterranean has shaped critical thinking in the field over the past two decades, has been appointed to the Faculty of the Institute for Advanced Study.  Dr. Chaniotis will become Professor in the Institute's School of Historical Studies effective July 1, 2010.

The Royal Dutch Mathematical Society has announced that Phillip A. Griffiths, Professor in the School of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study, has been selected to receive the 2008 Brouwer Prize.  According to the award citation, Professor Griffiths was chosen for "his work in complex algebraic geometry and (complex) differential geometry.

The Institute for Advanced Study has appointed Dr. Eric Schmidt and Dr. Curtis Callan to its Board of Trustees, effective July 1, 2008.  Dr. Schmidt is Chief Executive Officer of Google Inc., and Dr. Callan, who has been nominated by the Institute's School of Natural Sciences, is the J. S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor of Physics at Princeton University.

The work of one of America's foremost political thinkers will be recognized at a three-day conference on the Institute campus from June 2 to June 4.   Michael Walzer, Professor Emeritus in the School of Social Science, will be celebrated for his contributions to the ethical and political philosophy of the twentieth century at the "Justice, Culture and Tradition" conference.

The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences has announced that Jonathan Israel, Professor of Modern European History in the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study, has been selected to receive the 2008 Dr. A.H.

Jonathan Israel, Professor in the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study, will present a lecture titled The Islamic World and the Radical Enlightenment: Toleration, Freethinking and Personal Liberty on Wednesday, May 21, at 4:30 p.m. in Wolfensohn Hall on the Institute's campus.

In this lecture, Israel will address topics that arose from a recent innovative colloquium,
