English as a Second Language
Spouses and partners of Institute Members are invited to join English conversation groups to enhance English speaking skills. Two groups are currently available: beginning September 20, on Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:30am - 11:30pm at Murray-Dodge Hall on Princeton University campus - click here for more details; and beginning September 19, on Mondays 10:00am - 12:00pm with Helen Goddard at 97 Olden Lane on the Institute campus. Both conversation groups are open to adults only and free of charge. Individuals of all levels are encouraged to participate. Depending upon tutor availability, Members of the Institute Community may also participate in the Individual English Conversation Program at Princeton University - click here for more details.
The Princeton Public Library also offers an English Language Conversation Volunteer program for any adult interested in practicing conversational English. Volunteers will be on duty in the second floor Language Study Room or the Tower Room to work one-on-one or with small groups. No registration is required, just drop in and start talking. Volunteers are happy to discuss a wide variety of topics. Sessions are currently held Mondays 1:30pm; Tuesdays 4:00pm; Wednesdays 10:00am and 5:00pm; Thursdays 1:30pm; and Fridays 4:30pm. Most sessions run for 1.5 hours with a few lasting as long as 2 hours. The schedule is subject to change. Literacy Volunteers in Mercer County, Inc. (http://www.princetonol.com/groups/lvamc/home.html) provide free, confidential literacy tutoring services to adult residents of Mercer County. Services available include one-on-one, small group, and conversational sessions. Contact June Vogel or Victoria Golden at 587-6027 to schedule an interview for placement. A one-time registration fee of $20 is suggested. Sessions are scheduled at LVMC's Quakerbridge Road office in Hamilton and numerous other locations including the Princeton Public Library. Private tutors are available but it may take a bit of time to find a match, please be patient and participate in the other sessions available while waiting.
