Telephone Service
The Institute owns and operates a campus-wide Northern Telecom Meridian telephone system which provides service to all academic and administrative buildings and to all apartments in the housing complex. Voice mail is offered throughout the system. Policies on long-distance calling from offices vary among the Schools. Consult your School Administrative Officer for further information. Complete information about programming telephones, rates, and additional services can be found on the Institute's website. Some general information follows.
For local calls, press 9 for an outside line then the seven-digit number.
For calls outside our area code (609), press 9 for an outside line then 1, the three-digit area code, and the seven-digit number
For international calls, press 9 for an outside line then 0-1-1, the country code, the city code, and the number.
For internal calls, Institute offices and apartments, simply dial the last four digits of the seven-digit number.
You know you have voice mail when the red light on the upper right corner of your telephone is lit. To listen to your voice mail messages:
- From any telephone, access Meridian Mail by calling 8010. From an office phone, you may simply press the "message" button. From outside the Institute, you may dial (609) 734-8010 from a touch tone phone.
- When you hear the voice, dial your own extension and the # (pound) key, followed by your password and the # key again. Your password is initially the same as your extension.
- To play each message, dial 2.
- After you have listened to a message, you may delete it by dialing 76.
- To rewind within a message, dial 1. To fast forward, dial 3.
- To hear the previous message, press 4. To hear the next message, press 6.
- To exit or log off from Meridian Mail just hang up.
Institute telephone directories are published in September and January of each academic year. Copies are delivered to all academic offices. All changes, additions, and deletions should be sent to Human Resources (
, ext. 8243). The electronic directory is regularly updated and can be accessed through the Institute's website.
Pay phones are located in the lower level of Fuld Hall, in the laundry room, fitness center, Simonyi Hall, Wolfensohn Hall, and the Dining Hall.
To report a problem with your telephone or to request a change of service, use any of the following methods: e-mail addressed
; call ext. 8009; or interoffice mail to Receptionist. Please provide your name, where you can be reached, the phone number and location of the faulty equipment, and the description of the problem you are experiencing.
