There are many ways of including the Institute in your philanthropic plans: with gifts of annual support, major gifts of endowment and program support, or with gifts made in conjunction with your estate planning process. However much you are able to give, your support will make a difference for the future of the Institute. Our Development Staff is here to help. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch for more information. Your support is deeply appreciated.
Ways to Give
Make an Unrestricted Gift to the Annual Fund
Unrestricted annual gifts allow the Institute the greatest flexibility to direct funding where it is needed most. Annual gifts in any amount are appreciated. Unrestricted annual gifts can also be made through the Friends of the Institute and through AMIAS, the Association of Members of the Institute for Advanced Study. Through their gifts, the Friends of the Institute and former and current IAS scholars provide significant discretionary income every year to the Institute, supplying stipends for Members and allowing the Institute to respond to new opportunities, as well as helping to meet unexpected challenges to the budget. On a daily basis, unrestricted gifts have a direct effect on the quality of life on campus for Members and Faculty.
Contribute to the Endowment
Benefiting the Institute community in perpetuity, gifts to the endowment are carefully and prudently invested to generate a steady stream of income. In recent years, as much as eighty percent of the Institute’s core operating expenses have been met by income from the endowment. A gift to the endowment helps to ensure the future independence of the Institute and to preserve its mission: to encourage and support fundamental research in the sciences and humanities—the original, often speculative thinking that produces advances in knowledge that change the way we understand the world.
Name a Professorship
The permanent Faculty form the core of academic life at the Institute. Endowed chairs provide for the most inventive scientists and humanists of a generation, who in turn serve as mentors for new generations.
Name a Visiting Professorship
Visiting Professors are distinguished scholars from around the world who augment the range of expertise covered by the Schools and provide guidance to postdoctoral Members. A Visiting Professorship may be supported with an annual gift or with a gift of endowment, and will allow new connections to form that are an invaluable asset to young scholars and ultimately to the global scientific community.
Name a Membership
Each year, approximately two hundred postdoctoral men and women work full-time on frontier topics in the sciences and humanities. Their accomplishments during their time at the Institute often go far beyond what they—or anyone else—could have expected. Supporting a Membership means investing in science or the humanities in their most meaningful and explorative forms. Memberships can be supported with an annual gift or with a gift of endowment.
Support the Institute’s Four Schools
A top priority for the Schools is securing funding for Faculty and Membership positions, but donors may also choose to fund new initiatives, sustain special programs, or target special opportunities within each of the Institute’s four Schools.
Name a Physical Space or Building on Campus
Offices and buildings function both as retreats for focused individual thought and as meeting places where collaborations are formed. Available for naming are Buildings A, B and D, the Historical Studies and Social Science Library, and the West Building, as well as classrooms and offices.
Establish a Fund for a Specific Purpose
Donors may establish an endowment fund in honor or memory of a loved one, as the donor chooses. Please contact us to discuss your wishes in more detail.
How to Give
Gifts of Cash
Gifts of cash include payments by check, credit card or debit card, or bank wire transfer. If you intend to transfer funds by wire, please see these instructions, and contact Michael Gehret by email at email@example.com or phone (+1) 609-734-8218 so that we may credit your gift properly.
Gifts of Appreciated Securities
There are often significant tax advantages associated with gifts of appreciated securities. You may be able to avoid capital gains tax and receive an income tax deduction for the fair market value of the stock at the time of the gift. You should consult with your financial advisor on the best way to maximize these benefits. Please see these instructions for transferring stock gifts to the Institute for Advanced Study and contact Michael Gehret by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or phone (+1) 609-734-8218 so that we may credit your gift properly.
Gifts from Your Estate
Gifts of Tangible Personal Property
The Institute welcomes inquiries about gifts of real estate or other real or personal property. These gifts are reviewed by the appropriate committee at the Institute. A professional letter of appraisal and a letter from the donor stating that the Institute has the right to dispose of the gift in the future are requested. Please contact Michael Gehret to discuss your gift.
The Institute for Advanced Study is a 501(c)(3) organization, and gifts to the Institute are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.
