Directions to IAS

The Institute for Advanced Study is located at 1 Einstein Drive in Princeton in central New Jersey. The Institute and its 800-acre grounds are approximately one mile from the center of the town of Princeton and are easily accessible by car, train, or taxi from major cities along the Eastern seaboard.

In order to preserve the tranquil environment necessary for the work of the Institute's Faculty and visiting scholars, all School and administrative buildings are not open to the public.

Directions to the Institute

From Boston (approx. 5 ½ hours)
Take Route 90 (Massachusetts Turnpike) west to Route 84 south toward Hartford, CT.  When approaching Hartford, follow signs for Route 91 south. Take Route 91 south to Route 95 south (New Haven).  Follow Route 95 south through Connecticut and into New York State, then cross the George Washington Bridge into New Jersey. After crossing the George Washington Bridge, take the New Jersey Turnpike south to Exit 9 (New Brunswick). After paying the toll, bear right and follow signs to Route 18 north. Merge left to the middle lane. When the lanes divide, keep left while following signs for Route 1 south (Princeton). Take Route 1 south approximately 16 miles to Alexander Road west. Follow Alexander Road to the end, at stop sign turn left. At the 2nd traffic light (Lovers Lane / Olden Lane) turn left. Proceed to the 3rd right hand turn, which is Einstein Drive. Fuld Hall, the Institute's main administration building (the building with the clock tower above it), is located on the left hand side.

From New York City (approx. 1 ½ - 2 hours)
Take the Lincoln Tunnel, Holland Tunnel, George Washington Bridge or the Goethals Bridge to New Jersey and follow the signs to the New Jersey Turnpike south. Take the New Jersey Turnpike south to Exit 9 (New Brunswick). After paying the toll, bear right and follow signs to Route 18 north. Merge left to the middle lane. When the lanes divide, keep left while following signs for Route 1 south (Princeton). Take Route 1 south approximately 16 miles to Alexander Road west. Follow Alexander Road to the end, at stop sign turn left. At the 2nd traffic light (Lovers Lane / Olden Lane) turn left. Proceed to the 3rd right hand turn, which is Einstein Drive. From JFK International Airport (approx. 2 hours)
Take the Van Wyck Expressway north to the Belt Parkway west to the Verrazano Bridge. Go over the Verrazano Bridge to Staten Island Expressway west (Interstate 278). Follow signs to the Goethals Bridge. After crossing the Goethals Bridge, take the New Jersey Turnpike south to exit 9 (New Brunswick). After paying the toll, bear right and follow signs to Route 18 north. Merge left to the middle lane. When the lanes divide, keep left while following signs for Route 1 south (Princeton). Take Route 1 south approximately 16 miles to Alexander Road west. Follow Alexander Road to the end, at stop sign turn left. At the 2nd traffic light (Lovers Lane / Olden Lane) turn left. From LaGuardia International Airport (approx. 2 hours)
Take the Grand Central Parkway north to the Tri-Borough Bridge. Continue over the Tri-Borough Bridge to the Deegan Expressway (Interstate 87) north to exit 1-C. Take Interstate 95 south to the George Washington Bridge. Follow the George Washington Bridge to the New Jersey Turnpike south to exit 9 (New Brunswick). After paying the toll, bear right and follow signs to Route 18 north. Merge left to the middle lane. When the lanes divide, keep left while following signs for Route 1 south (Princeton). Take Route 1 south approximately 16 miles to Alexander Road west. Follow Alexander Road to the end, at stop sign turn left. At the 2nd traffic light (Lovers Lane / Olden Lane) turn left. From Newark International Airport (approx. 1 hour)
Take the New Jersey Turnpike south to Exit 9 (New Brunswick). After paying the toll, bear right and follow signs to Route 18 north. Merge left to the middle lane. When the lanes divide, keep left while following signs for Route 1 south (Princeton).Take Route 1 south approximately 16 miles to Alexander Road west. Follow Alexander Road to the end, at stop sign turn left. At the 2nd traffic light (Lovers Lane / Olden Lane) turn left. Proceed to the 3rd right hand turn, which is Einstein Drive. From Washington, D.C. (approx. 3 ½ hours)
Take I-95 north through Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania to I-295 South in New Jersey. In Baltimore, Maryland, you can take either the Harbor Tunnel or the McHenry Tunnel, they both lead to I-95 North. Follow signs for Philadelphia, not the Delaware Memorial Bridge. Continue on I-295 South into New Jersey to Exit 68A (Princeton Pike north). Follow Princeton Pike north to Maxwell Lane, and turn right. Proceed to the 3rd right hand turn, which is Einstein Drive.   Fuld Hall, the Institute's main administration building (the building with the clock tower above it), is located on the right hand side.

From Philadelphia (approx. 1 hour)
Take I-295 South into New Jersey to Exit 68A (Princeton Pike north). Follow Princeton Pike north to Maxwell Lane, and turn right. From Philadelphia International Airport (approx. 1 hour)

From Trenton / Mercer Airport (approx. 30 minutes)
Take I-295 South to exit 68A (Princeton Pike north). Follow Princeton Pike north to Maxwell Lane, and turn right. Proceed to the 3rd right hand turn, which is Einstein Drive.   Fuld Hall, the Institute's main administration building (the building with the clock tower above it), is located on the right hand side.

The Institute for Advanced Study is putting all of its vendors that deliver to our facility on alert.  Given that the Institute is situated in a quiet, residential neighborhood, truck traffic is sometimes an issue.  We are requiring all delivery truck traffic to gain access to our campus using the MAXWELL LANE entrance.  MAXWELL LANE should also be used to exit the campus onto MERCER ROAD.

From New York City
You may take either New Jersey Transit (973-275-5555) or Amtrak (1-800-872-7245) from New York Penn Station (32nd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues) to Princeton Junction Station.
New Jersey Transit -  Northeast Corridor Line (approx. 1 hour 10 mins.)
Amtrak (approx. 47 mins.)

After arriving at the Princeton Junction Station, you need to travel to the Princeton Station to get to the town of Princeton. Either take the Princeton Station train (“Dinky”) (5 minute ride) and walk to the Institute (approx. 1 mile), or take one of the taxis parked at the Princeton Junction Station directly to the Institute.
   
From JFK Airport
You may take the SuperShuttle Manhattan (1-800-258-3826) from JFK to New York Penn Station and then take either New Jersey Transit (973-275-5555) or Amtrak (1-800-872-7245) from New York Penn Station to Princeton Junction Station.

From Newark Liberty International Airport   
You may take the AirTrain shuttle to New Jersey Transit at the airport. Take the Northeast Corridor Line to Princeton Junction Station. After arriving at the Princeton Junction Station, you need to travel to the Princeton Station to get to the town of Princeton. Either take the Princeton Station train (“Dinky”) (5 minute ride) and walk to the Institute (approx. 1 mile), or take one of the taxis parked at the Princeton Junction Station directly to the Institute.

From Philadelphia
The 30th Street station, reachable via the SEPTA (1-215-580-9800) train system, offers New Jersey Transit or Amtrak to the Trenton station. Once at the Trenton station, take New Jersey Transit to the Princeton Junction Station. After arriving at the Princeton Junction Station, you need to travel to the Princeton Station to get to the town of Princeton. Either take the Princeton Station train (“Dinky”) (5 minute ride) and walk to the Institute (approx. 1 mile), or take one of the taxis parked at the Princeton Junction Station directly to the Institute.

From Philadelphia International Airport
Take the R1 SEPTA (1-215-580-9800) train to 30th Street station in Philadelphia. From 30th Street station, you may take New Jersey Transit or Amtrak to the Princeton Junction Station. After arriving at the Princeton Junction Station, you need to travel to the Princeton Station to get to the town of Princeton. Either take the Princeton Station train (“Dinky”) (5 minute ride) and walk to the Institute (approx. 1 mile), or take one of the taxis parked at the Princeton Junction Station directly to the Institute.
